Do you have a patchy lawn? Have some muddy or dry spots in your yard that you would like to turn into luscious green grass?
Well, if you are thinking about revamping your lawn, you are at the right place!
How do you choose between getting sod or grass seed?
Grass Seed
If you have some dry or muddy patches in your yard, you may be thinking about adding some grass seed.
Advantages:
You can pick the type of grass you want to grow or match it with the grass you already have growing in your yard.
Grass seed bags come in a variety of sizes depending on how big the space is you are filling. Bags can range from 3 pounds, 5 pounds, 10 pounds, 50 pounds and so on.
Costs of the bags can range from $10.00 to $100.00 + depending on the size and brand you use, making this a relatively cheap option.
Not as labor intensive as sod
Disadvantages:
Using and planting grass seed can take weeks or months to start growing
Grass seed will use more water & maintenance over time. After you plant the seed, it will need extra attention in order to germinate and start sprouting in order to get a thick lawn.
Grass seed is best planted in the spring, so you might not have as much luck if you wait to plant in the summer or fall.
Sod
When you order sod it typically comes in pallets, as you can see below:

Sod can also be sold by square feet or square yard.
Advantages:
You can pick the type of grass you want to grow or match it with the grass you already have growing in your yard.
You will already have fresh green grass laid out in your yard.
You will still need to keep your sod watered daily, whether by hose or sprikler system, but still takes less water than starting from grass seed.
Less maintenance over time.
You can lay sod down in Spring, Summer, or Fall
Disadvantages:
More Labor required to prep and lay sod out
Costs more than grass seed
